Trinidad & Tobago passes Zones of Special Operations Act

The way is now clear for Trinidad & Tobago to implement Zones of Special Operations.

The Law Reform (Zones of Special Operations) (Special Security and Community Development Measures) Bill 2026 was passed in the House of Representatives in Trinidad & Tobago yesterday.

The Zones of Special Operations will replace the current state of emergency which ends this month.

The ZOSO bill, which gives law enforcement extended powers in areas deemed crime hotspots, was approved by 27 votes in favour and 11 against, with no abstentions.

The Kamla Persad Bissesar administration says the ZOSO will assist the security forces in building on the reduction in murders and other crimes achieved during the state of emergency.

This legislative development development in Trinidad & Tobago comes nine years after Jamaica enacted its own ZOSO law in 2017.
