EIB mulls US$4.7 million support for Rock Mobile 4G rollout

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is considering financing of about US$4.7 million to support the rollout of a 4G network by telecoms entrant Rock Mobile.

The proposed funding, forms part of a 29 million euro project to acquire and deploy a 4G wireless network across the Kingston metropolitan area and surrounding parishes.

The network will include about 100 radio access sites, along with core systems and supporting technology.

The financing is currently under review.

Rock Mobile secured spectrum in 2021 but has not yet launched services.

The Government says the company has been granted a final 12-month extension in 2024 to roll out its network, along with a deferral of its annual spectrum licence fee.

The project has received support from the International Finance Corporation, and Nokia has been contracted as the sole network provider.

Once completed, the company aims to expand coverage to the majority of the population.
