Edwin Allen's Romarion Finnigan was in blistering form, as he and Hydel's Shemonique Hazle were the fastest qualifiers from the Class 1 boyz and girls 100m heats on Tuesday’s o[pening day of the ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Championships on Tuesday. Finnigan sped to 10.18 seconds, defeating one of the favourites Sanjay Seymore who was second in 10.46 seconds.
Hazle ran 11.44 seconds, beating Tiana Marshall into second in 11.66 and Tiana Oliver in third with 11.82 seconds.
World leader Shanoya Douglas also progressed from her heat, easing to 11.85 seconds. The Class 2 boys 400m is also promising fireworks with 8 athletes breaking 50 seconds in qualifying.
Nicholas Jones from Lacovia High led all qualifiers, crossing the line in 48.83 seconds.
Hydel's Robert Miller was the fastest qualifier, making it to the final of the Class 1 boys 400m hurdles with 50.67 seconds.
The second and third fastest were Jahvanie Tyrell of Kingston College in 51.22 seconds and Rojay Black of Jamaica College with 52.28 seconds. The Class 2 boys 400m hurdles saw Jaeden Campbell lead the way finishing in 51.83 seconds.
In the girls 400m hurdles open, Hydel's Aaliyah Mullings 59.46 seconds, Edwin Allen's Kelly-Ann Carr 59.74 and Natassia Fletcher 59.75 also from Hydel, led all qualifiers.
In the field, defending champion Michael-Andre Edwards of Jamaica College was the only athlete to make the automatic standard of 7.05m in the Class 1 boys long jump, leaping to 7.53m. KC’s Amani Philips was the next best qualifier with 7.04m.
The 100m finals for all classes will highlight Wednesday's second day of competition.
