Gonzales begins 400m Olympic campaign

Quartermiler Jermaine Gonzales got his season off to a start on Saturday with a 45.93 seconds run at Saturday's UWI Invitational Meet held at the Usain Bolt track.

Gonzales, who went out a little too slow, covered the one lap event ahead of training partners Allodin Fothergill 46.22 and Edino Steele 46.27.

Jordan Forte of MVP (46.60) and Dwight Mullings, of Racers Track Club, 46.75, were fourth and fifth behind the top finishers. Javere Bell, however, was the overall fourth place finisher, having won heat 3 in 46.32.

In the women's event, Racers Track Club's Rosemarie Whyte came out on top in 51.86 ahead of MVP's pair of Sherone Simpson 52.77 and Christine Day 53.34.

Shereefa Lloyd, also of Racers, was fourth in 53.59. Brigitte Foster-Hylton of MVP was second in heat 2, running 53.87, behind Sheryl Morgan 53.79.

Meanwhile, Warren Weir, who ended the 2011 season with a personal best of 20.43 ran an impressive opener of 20.65 (-1.1m/s wind) to win the men's 200m, getting the better of his former Calabar High School teammate Oshane Bailey, now representing Akan, 20.81, in the time final event. Mario Forsythe of Racers with 20.93 was third.

Schillonie Calvert of Racers won the Olympic Development women's 200m in 23.56 ahead of Kaliese Spencer of MVP 23.62 and Shermaine Williams (24.32).

The college women's 200m went to Carrie Russell of UTech in 23.90 ahead of Yanique Ellington of G.C. Foster College (24.17) and Audra Segree, also of UTech (24.25).

Bailey returned to top the men's 100m field in 10.27 over Kenroy Anderson of Racers 10.29 and heat 2 winner Sheldon Mitchell of Swept 10.33.

Cardine Copeland of UTech ran 11.91 to beat her teammate Segree 11.93 in the college women's 100m.

Earlier, Ristananna Tracey took the women's 400m hurdles in 57.40 ahead
