International volleyball returns to the island this summer after the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JAVA), was successful in its bid to host the 2016 Caribbean Volleyball Championship.
The country had submitted a bid to host the women’s tournament but has been asked to host both the men and women in the July of this year.
This was advised to the association on Friday by the President of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA), Mushtaque Mohammed, who visited Jamaica in December to conduct site visits for the proposed tournament and training venues, as well as hotels for the athletes and officials.
In his letter to JAVA President Rudolph Speid, Mohammed stated “from my inspection visit, it was evident that you and your team have the enthusiasm and drive necessary to provide the best conditions for the hosting of our major tournaments”.
Speid said his organisation was excited to be asked to host the july event and preparation will now be stepped up.
“The National Indoor Centre is already up to standard; we have to make some preparations for the flooring. NORSECA has also promised to give us another indoor floor to put in the National Arena for practice purposes and of course we have to talk to the stakeholders,” said Speid.
With the island also hosting the second round of women’s beach volleyball Olympic qualifiers in Ocho Rios at the end of January, this will be the second major international volleyball competition that will be held in Jamaica this year.
