In a bid to stave off reprisal attacks by rival gangs, the Police High Command has extended the 48-hour curfew imposed in sections of Trench Town, Jones Town, Craig Town and Admiral Town in Kingston on Friday.
The curfew will expire on Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps, head of the Kingston Western Police, told Radio Jamaica News that the curfew was imposed in response to two murders, including last week's fatal shooting on Collie Smith Drive in Arnett Gardens.
Stewart Burton, 33, otherwise called 'Bing', was fatally shot by gunmen in the vicinity of Eight Street.
"These incidents have created some amount of tension and an ease across these and ajoining in areas, with the threat of further violence. Based on our assessment, an extension was requested and same granted, wherein it was extended by a further 48 hours, and this will conclude at 6 p.m. Tuesday," he said.
SSP Phipps added that the police have withdrawn all permits for entertainment events in the area.
"We will do further assessment and strategise as we seek to restore calm to these communities. It should be noted that these curfews have restricted movements and other activities within these communities and people can only move around on the instructions of the ground commander. These restrictions will affect all events previously scheduled during the period of the curfew, and as such, all previous permits for events have been withdrawn," he announced.
