IOC upgrades J’cans medals from Sydney Olympics

The 100 and 200 metre placings achieved by Jamaica's Tayna Lawrence, Beverly McDonald and Jamaican born sprinter turned Slovenian Merlene Ottey, at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games were on Wednesday officially upgraded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

This follows American Marion Jones' admission of doping during the time of the Sydney Games.

Lawrence who came third in the 100 metres will get a duplicate silver and Ottey the bronze.

McDonald who came fourth in the 200 metres will also get a bronze medal.

The 100 metre gold medal will remain vacant due to doping concerns over Greek silver-medalist Katerina Thanou.

Jamaica's medal tally at those games, reflecting the increase, is nine--five silver and four bronze.

The IOC will next Friday's ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sports to announce the fate of the relay medals.

Jamaica who took silver behind the United States in the 4x100 metres relay will move up to gold if the standings are adjusted.
