Jamaica defeats USA in historic football win

Jamaica defeated the United States at the senior level of football for the first time in its history Friday night at the National Stadium.

The team withstood a late wave of attack from the Americans to win their World Cup qualifier 2-1 and
lead their CONCACAF semi-final group.

Captain Luton Shelton scored what turned out to be the winning goal from a 60th minute free kick.

The goal completed a rally for the Jamaican team which had fallen behind early in the contest, with Clint
Dempsey scoring for the Americans in the first minute.

However Rodolph Austin equalised for Jamaica through a 23rd minute free kick which beat U.S.
goal-keeper Tim Howard, after taking a deflection.

The win puts Jamaica atop their group on 7 points heading into next Tuesday's return clash against
the Americans in Columbus, Ohio.
