The local sporting fraternity was dealt a knockout blow on Thursday with news that Jamaica's former British Empire (Commonwealth Games) lightweight gold medallist George 'Bunny' Grant died after a fight with illness. The death of "Bunny" Grant, who celebrated his 78th birthday in September, was confirmed with RJR Sports by his son, Junior.
"Bunny" Grant, who was Jamaica's trailblazer in boxing in the 50s, 60s and 70s retired in 1977. According to Junior Grant, "Bunny" Grant, was only released from hospital on Tuesday of this week, after being admitted on October 23 with a second stroke. It’s understood that, Grant who lost his sight some five months ago, had previously suffered a first stroke three years ago.
Reacting to Grant's passing from the AIBA Conference in Moscow, Russia, President of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control Stephen "Bomber" Jones says the legendary Jamaican pugilist's name will live forever. Minister of Sport, Olivia Grange was distraught at the news of Bunny Grant’s passing. Grant, who fought in several weight divisions in his 19 year career, retired with a ring record of 52 wins, 15 losses and 5 draws from 73 fights.
