Rajindra Campbell breaks national shot put record

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Spencer Darlington

Shot putter Rajindra Campbell set a new national record to highlight the Jamaican performances at Saturday's World Athletics Continental Tour silver meet in Madrid, Spain.

His throw is the joint third best in the world this year and he was one of three Jamaican winners on the day.

The 27 year old former Ferncourt High and Kingston College athlete produced a brilliant final round effort of 22.22 metres to break the old national record of 21.96 metres set by 2015 World Championship bronze medallist O’Dayne Richards six years ago.

The mark which was also a meet record, surpassed Campbell's previous lifetime best of 21.31 metres done two months ago.

The 22.22 metre effort also saw Campbell achieving the world championships qualifying standard which has been set at 21.40 metres.

5-time world 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce was also among the winners, clocking a meet record 10.83 seconds to land that event, while Olympic bronze medallist and national champion Megan Tapper who sped to 12.69 seconds to take the women's sprint hurdles.
