Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls have won the inaugural Margaret Beckford Trophy, after taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead over South Africa in the three match netball series at the National Indoor Sports center on Wednesday night.
The Sunshine Girls played with pace and tenacity to win the game 59-47. The Jamaicans held quarterly leads of 18-13; 34-26 and 50-36.
Goal-shooter Shimona Jok led the scoring for Jamaica with 35 goals from 37 attempts, while goal attack Shanice Beckford weighed in with 14 from 17.
Sunshine Girl Latanya Wilson was named MVP of the game. Coach of the Sunshine Girls Sasher-Gaye Henry-Wright says her team put in an improved performance.
The third and final game takes place at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday. Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Under-21 team went down 49-32 to their South African counterparts. The young Sunshine Girls were also beaten in the first game.
