Jury selection in the high-profile trial of actor Jussie Smollett began on Monday, nearly three years after his claim that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack.
The 39-year-old star of hit US TV show Empire, reported in January 2019 that he was attacked by two men who yelled pro-Donald Trump slogans and tied a noose around his neck.
Authorities accused him of staging the attack as a publicity stunt to promote his career.
The former Empire show actor was indicted by a special prosecutor in Illinois last year on six counts of lying to police.
He has denied any wrongdoing.
If convicted, Smollett faces a prison sentence of up to three years.
