Cable & Wireless is projecting that a possible deal with US cable company, Liberty Global, will help both entities add scale in a high-growth, low-penetration region for smartphones and broadband connections.
Cable & Wireless, the parent company of Flow Jamaica, last month said it was having talks with Liberty Global, which could see it being taken over for more than US$5 billion.
A report in Friday's issue of the Irish Examiner newspaper quoted Phil Bentley, CEO of Cable & Wireless, as saying that, in the telecoms industry, size matters, pointing to the US$18 billion earned by Liberty Global as against C&W's US$2.5 billion earnings.
Mr. Bentley declined to comment on the status of the talks with Liberty or when an announcement might be made.
He has been working to expand Cable & Wireless' business in high-growth markets in Latin America and the Caribbean.
