Four new JPS wind turbines erected

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has moved one step closer to reducing its reliance on imported fuel.

The company is reporting that the first of four wind turbines for its Wind Power Plant at Munro in St. Elizabeth has been erected.

The other three turbines will be constructed this month, while work continues on the Power Plant’s substation.

The project, which is costing JPS $800 million, will add three megawatts of power to the national grid.

The construction of the wind power plant is part of JPS’ fuel diversification effort, which will see a reduction in the company’s dependence on imported fuel.

Alston Watson, Manager of Expansion Projects at JPS, says the wind turbines utilize modern technology and are cost effective to maintain.

They are designed to withstand a Category 5 Hurricane.

The project has resulted in employment for scores of local workers in road widening activities, civil and electrical works as well as construction activities.
