IT expert backs move to block ads by over-the-top service providers

A regional Information Technology expert believes the move by Digicel to block ads shown to consumers by over-the-top services like Whatsapp, Google and Facebook, using its network, may ultimately not prove to be effective, but could be a move in the right direction.

Digicel will start blocking the ads on its network, starting in Jamaica, in an attempt to force the entities into a revenue-sharing deal.

Digicel has long argued that it believes the companies unfairly generate revenue on its network.

Russell Williams, an IT expert,  in recent interview with WINN FM  in St. Kitts, said the move by Digicel was long in coming.

"I don't think they're going to win the fight with Whatsapp and those other voice over IP services, or with Netflix and so forth," he said.

On the other hand, he argued, there might be revenue earning opportunities for service providers like Digicel "such as getting other ads paid for; perhaps even running their own ads."
