A shortage of labour, crop disease and adverse weather conditions are having a negative effect on Jamaican yam production and exports, despite growing international demand.
Data released by the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization indicated that Jamaica was the top exporter of yam in 2020 when exports amounted to US$33.4 million.
The data further indicated that the value of these exports, particularly of negro and yellow yam, jumped to US$40.8 million in 2023, an increase of 16.5% when compared with what was earned in 2022.
And data released by JAMPRO indicates there are currently 28 thousand yam farmers in Jamaica.
