Sloane Jackson, head of business at BYD, says its electric vehicles are made in China and shipped directly from China to Jamaica.
As a result, he says the company's prices will not be affected by the 145 per cent tariff placed on Chinese exports through the US.
Meanwhile, Mr Sloane says there has been an increase in the demand for electric vehicles in recent months, while pointing out that the warranty on these new vehicles is eight years, compared with six years for gasoline powered new vehicles.
Vehicle chargers
In a related industry update, Richard Gordon, Director of Corporate Communications at the electricity distribution company, JPS, has revealed that the company currently has 37 fast electric vehicle chargers across Jamaica.
He adds that JPS plans to install another seven this year, bringing the total to 44.
Mr Gordon also pointed out that its one megawatt fast charger can give a vehicle enough electric power in 15 minutes to travel 200 kilometers, at a cost of only J$1,500.
