Patients in the intensive care unit, ICU, at the Bustamante Hospital for Children are to be transferred following a fire at the institution last night.
It occurred after an air conditioning unit in the consultant's office exploded. The fire was contained to the office and there were no injuries.
Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, who went to the scene, says the patients in the ICU were safely evacuated to another section of the Hospital. He says it is difficult to operate without the Unit and therefore they will have to put in place a makeshift one.
In the meantime, the Health Minister is expecting normality to return to the Bustamante Hospital for Children in two weeks. He says the Health Ministry will come up with the funds to carry out repairs.
And the Chief Medical Officer provided details on the patients who were in the intensive care unit and arrangements to transfer them. A decision on the transfers is expected today. It involves 4 patients ranging from 3-days old to 3 years. He says arrangements have been made to send them to the UHWI.
