Ninety-one murders were recorded for the month of January, a 36 per cent decline over last year.
According to crime statistics released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force, this is a significant decrease from the 143 murders committed for the similar period last year.
The statistics for last month also show that 71 people were shot and injured and 83 breaches of the new firearms Act were detected.
The police say 27 per cent of the murders committed in January have been cleared up.
Break-ins also saw a reduction, moving to 70 compared to 77 last January.
The Clarendon Police Division recorded the highest number of murders for the month, with 12, while St. James and Kingston Western were tied at 11 each.
