Dr. Omar Hawthorne
A call has been made for a review of the Whistle Blower legislation following recent allegations of corruption, nepotism and mismanagement at entities under the Science, Energy and Technology ministry.
The Protected Disclosures or Whistle Blower Act was passed in 2011 and provides protection to individuals who report wrongdoing in organisations.
However, university lecturer Dr. Omar Hawthorne, notes that up to last year, there had been no report of the legislation being used.
Dr. Hawthorne says the law is meant to expose the very issues which have now surfaced at Petrojam, the National Energy Solutions Limited (NESOL) and other agencies.
However, she says, although it appears employees within the entities knew of the irregularities, they did not speak out.
Dr. Hawthorne argued that many workers might not be aware of the legislation and suggested there needs to be more education for employees about the law and how to use it.
