Attorney Bert Samuels says American flight attendant, Kalina Collier should have been charged with creating public mischief after fraudulently claiming she was kidnapped in Jamaica.
She has since denied making such statements.
Ms. Collier’s initial claims about her situation on her social media account resulted in several of her followers subsequently calling for a boycott of Jamaica.
Mr. Samuels says she should have been made an example due to the damage her allegations may have caused Jamaica's reputation.
“Because what people are doing are (sic) trying to capitalise on the high crime rate in Jamaica. They try to do what we call murder tourism where you create a scene in a particular tourist destination and tarnish that destination,” he argues.
Ms. Collier left the island on Sunday.
Mr. Samuels says the police should consider having Ms. Collier extradited to face the consequences of her actions.
“Essentially she has been allowed just to walk away. There’s some countries where she would be extradited to come back and face her charges. So that’s open to the police to see whether that could be a case of extradition. She’s a US national then you know we’d have to request the US to release her back to us,” he adds.
The police said the JetBlue employee tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed in isolation, in keeping with Jamaica's prevention protocols.
Ms. Collier has maintained her complaints about the hotel at which she was quarantined and suggested she would be taking legal action.
