Bermuda: Britain blocks cannabis legalization bid

Governor of Bermuda, Rena Lalgie, says the United Kingdom has blocked the government's controversial bid to legalise the use and production of cannabis.

The Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs concluded that the bill was not consistent with obligations held by the UK and Bermuda under the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances.

There was no immediate reaction from the David Burt government.

Last year, the Premier said if royal assent was not given to the bill, it would destroy relations between Bermuda and Britain.

In March, Parliament again passed controversial legislation making it legal to grow and sell cannabis in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory.
