Canada’s Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, looks set to win that country’s federal election.
This result, if confirmed will be a major turnaround for the Liberals, who a few months ago had looked set for a major defeat to the Conservatives, after being in power for a decade.
But, Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian imports into the United States and his bizarre desire to make Canada part of the United States caused many voters to have a change of heart of handing the reins of power to Pierre Poilievre and his Conservative Party.
Major Canadian media were predicting late on Monday evening that the Liberals would win enough seats to form a new government.
With votes still being counted, CBC News said it was too soon to say whether it will be a minority or majority government, bearing in mind it requires 172 seats for any party to form a majority in the federal parliament.
Many political observers did not believe Trump’s open support of Pierre Polievere would help him, as most Canadians seemed bitterly opposed to any notion their government finding common cause with him on those two burning bilateral issues.
UPDATE: After it became clear that his Liberal Party had won a narrow victory in the election, Prime Minister Carney promised to lead a way that will foster unity across political lines, particularly in the face of Trump's aggressive stance towards Canada.
"As I've been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country," he said to shouts of "Never! Never!" from his defiant supporters.
Continuing, he warned: "These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never ever happen!"
