Canadian socialite spared prison time after killing Belize police chief

A 34-year-old Canadian socialite who killed police chief Henry Jemmott in Belize, has been spared prison time.

Jasmine Hartin, who appeared in court on Wednesday, was fined US$75,000.

The presiding judge said the fine must be paid within twelve months, or Hartin would face twelve months in prison.

Hartin must also spend 300 hours doing community work and make a video on the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption.

During the trial, it was revealed that on the night of Jemmott's death, Hartin and Jemmott were at a party.

The two took a stroll on the beach when at some point, Jemmott handed her his gun to put aside.

Hartin said that she had been drinking and fumbled the Glock 17 after the police chief asked for it back, leading to an accidental discharge.

He died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Hartin was charged with manslaughter by negligence and pleaded guilty in April 2023.

Hartin is the former partner of Andrew Ashcroft, the son of prominent UK businessman Lord Michael Ashcroft.

Under Belize's criminal code, the maximum prison sentence for manslaughter by negligence is five years.
