CARPHA against use of Ivermectin to treat COVID-19

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) says it does not support the use of the drug Ivermectin outside of well-regulated clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19.

It says this is because of the limited evidence available to assure a favorable benefit-risk balance when used in treating patients with COVID-19.

CARPHA is urging Member States to heed the current advice of the World Health Organization (WHO) regardless of disease severity or duration of symptoms.

CARPHA's stance is in line with the Ministry of Health's decision not to endorse the use of ivermectin for treating COVID-19 patients despite constant calls from various stakeholders.

Earlier this week, Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy said more Jamaicans were dying from COVID-19 while the Health Ministry waits on the WHO to endorse the use of Ivermectin despite evidence the drug could save lives.
