Case involving Westmoreland Central MP is “far from over” - says Political Commentator

Political commentator Lloyd B. Smith says the fact that the police have ended their investigation of  the case involving Westmoreland Central Member of  Parliament George Wright does not mean the matter is over.

The police launched a probe after a video surfaced of  a man violently attacking a woman.

It was later revealed that both Mr. Wright and businesswoman, Tannisha Singh, had made separate reports to the police about a physical altercation on April 6.

However, the police yesterday said they have ended the investigation at this time because of  the poor quality of the video and the fact that neither of  the parties are willing to participate in the probe.

Smith says the Jamaica Labour Party must take action.

“The fact that we are dealing with a public official of the highest order - someone who sits in the court of the land - the matter can therefore, not be put to rest because the Jamaica Constabulary Force now says it is over at this time. And so the ball is still in the court of the Jamaica Labour Party to deal with it in a manner that will give the public. The feeling that there is still some level of common decency in the political culture of Jamaica.

However, the Executive Director of  Jamaica Accountability Meter Portal (JAMP) Jeanette Calder, says it is clear the police have done all they can do.But she also says it's time for the parliament to move forward with impeachment legislation.

So what is JAMP asking ? For the Prime Minister to keep the promise made in 2016 , so we want him to include this impeachment bill - retable it into this 2021 legislative agenda, convene the joint select committee to review it, debate the bill and enact it in this legislative year,” Calder said.
