Charles fully briefed on farm workers' claims of sub-par conditions in Canada

Labour and Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. says he has received a full briefing on recent claims that Jamaican farm workers were subjected to poor working and living conditions in Canada.

The claims were made last week by a group of farm workers in Ontario after their living quarters were flooded by water.

Mr. Charles said the Ministry continues to closely monitor the situation. At the same time, he has requested a comprehensive report from the Chief Liaison Officer regarding the concerns and an update of the general activities of the liaison officers in the Jamaica Central Labour Organization.

Additionally, the minister said the Management Committee chaired by Permanent Secretary Colette Roberts Risden will review the protocols, guidelines and activities relating to the delivery of service to farm workers and provide recommendations for improvement where necessary.

The Ministry will also hold meetings with all stakeholders including employers, liaison officers and farm workers. These meetings will start with liaison officers on Wednesday.

The Labour Ministry will be meeting with members of the Helene Davis-Whyte led fact-finding team to review the findings of their report into the conditions of Jamaican farm workers in Canada.

According to Mr. Charles, the ministry wants to re-establish the lines of communication with the farm workers and "identify and action additional platforms for farm workers to freely communicate issues and complaints without fear of victimisation".
