Councillor suggests municipal corporations be allocated funds to clear garbage

Everton Fisher, Councillor for the Balaclava Division in St. Elizabeth and Layton Smith, Councillor for the Myersville Division

Everton Fisher, Councillor for the Balaclava Division in St. Elizabeth, is recommending that the Ministry of Local Government allocate funds to municipal corporations to assist with alleviating the chronic garbage problem.

Mr. Fisher wants to see the backlog of garbage cleared in time for Jamaica 60 celebrations.

During the monthly meeting of the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation on Thursday, Mr. Fisher urged the chairman to pitch the suggestion to Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie.

"Since solid waste is having a procurement problem, council can, in any one-off cleanup, hire two or three trucks," he suggested.

"We did it for Chikungunya, we get resources from the Ministry of Health to help us, so I don’t see why persons in administration and the political directorate are reluctant to engage council or some councillors who want to clean up their area."

Water

With sections of St. Elizabeth also experiencing dry conditions, Layton Smith, Councillor for the Myersville Division, said more water needs to be trucked to communities.

Mr. Smith said the allocation of two loads of water per month is woefully inadequate for areas in his South East St. Elizabeth division.

"I am making it straight and clear to the council, I’m putting them on alert that if I don't get funding for water for the Myersville division, I'll be going out there with the citizens of the division and we will be protesting so that everybody can see this situation that is happening within the Myersville division," he warned.
