COVID-19: State of Emergency declared in Trinidad & Tobago

The Government of Trinidad & Tobago declared a state of emergency on Saturday as it steps up measures to stem the riding tide of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the twin-island state.

One of the main features of the State of Emergency is an overnight curfew, running from 9pm to 5am, with exceptions only for essential services.

The emergency measure was announced by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.

The announcement came on a day when the country registered 21 more COVID-19 related deaths.

That followed 11 deaths on Friday.

The country has recorded a total of 265 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

It is believed that the sharp rise in cases is mainly due to the presence of the Brazilian strain of the virus, which is highly contagious.
