The Jamaica Medical Doctors Association (JMDA) and the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) say their members at Cornwall Regional Hospital have been left traumatised after being threatened by men who turned up at the institution this morning to demand the release of a male patient.
It was reported that more than a dozen individuals tried to remove the man from the accident and emergency unit but were stopped by security personnel.
Radio Jamaica News was informed that the men demanded that the patient be released into their custody but medical staff resisted after stating that he was ill and needed treatment.
The patient was eventually released.
The police say contrary to earlier reports, no gun was drawn.
Following the incident, employees at the hospital stopped working due to safety concerns.
NAJ President Patsy Edwards Henry told Radio Jamaica News that her members at Cornwall Regional Hospital are now on edge.
"The nurses were in tears," she said. "They were traumatised by somebody coming in, taking out the patient and threatening if anybody calls the police.... I spoke with the Director of Nursing Services who said she is having to call in [a] counsellor 'cause persons are just terrified."
According to JMDA President Dr. Mindi Fitz-Henley, doctors at the hospital are also "still very, very traumatised", with some of them leaving the compound following the incident.
