Downtown Montego Bay businesses badly affected by flood

T'Shura Gibbs, President, Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce

Members of the business community in downtown Montego Bay, St. James are evaluating their losses following Wednesday's massive flooding during heavy rains.

The downpour caused major gullies in the city to overflow their banks, leaving roads and several buildings flooded.

Stores, supermarkets, banks, offices and gas stations were inundated.

T'Shura Gibbs, President of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, told RJR News that there was evidence of “significant loss by operators in downtown Montego Bay.”

She stressed that the impact appeared not to have been great for the hotels which are situated outside of downtown Montego Bay, referring only to a hotel lobby “under water”… with “some tourists walking in the water.”

Attention will have to be paid to the downtown business district, however, she reiterated, where “what I’ve seen is significant.”
