Laban creates mild upset to win Caymanas Park feature

The Richard Azan-trained Laban created an 8-1 mild upset to win Saturday's feature event, the SVREL Security Department Trophy for Overnight Allowance runners over the 5 straight course at Caymanas Park.

The 8 year old bay horse raced prominently behind the favourite Madelyn's Sunshine, Joy Is Golden and Geolithic before taking over in the closing stages of the $1.25 million  contest.

He was ridden to victory by visiting Panamanian jockey Ishmael Velasquez. Laban covered the distance in 57.03 seconds to win by a length.

Meanwhile, Jamaica 2000 Guineas winner California Crown went from gate to wire in winning the co-feature St Catherine Cup, a Restricted Stakes contest for native bred and imported 3 year old and up going 5 and a half furlongs.

The 4 year old chestnut colt closed out a double for jockey Robert Halledeen and champion trainer Jason DaCosta.

Racing continues next Saturday.
