Encouraging progress announced in US based COVID-19 vaccine project

A COVID-19 vaccine being developed in the United States is ready to move on to the final stages, according to the New England Journal of Medicine, which on Tuesday published results of  the vaccine's phase-one trial.

Developed by the biotechnology company Moderna, the results showed the vaccine triggered an immune response in all 45 volunteers who received it. The levels of antibodies were similar to those of patients who naturally recovered from the virus.

Only mild side effects were seen, including fatigue, chills, and muscle pain.

Later this month, the vaccine will undergo phase-three of the trial. From there, regulators will decide whether to approve it.

Although it does show promise, the earliest consumers will be seeing this vaccine is next year.

The venture, involving 30,000 people, will mark the world's largest study of a potential COVID-19 vaccine so far.

The National Institutes of Health-developed shot isn't the only one set for such massive United States based testing, crucial to spot rare side effects.

The US Government plans another study by Johnson & Johnson, while Pfizer Incorporated is arranging its own huge study.
