EOJ dismisses claim it failed to facilitate nomination of UIC candidates

The Electoral of Jamaica (EOJ) is rubbishing claims by the United Independents' Congress (UIC) of a lack of support for its proposed candidates to be nominated on Wednesday for the upcoming by-elections.

In a release Thursday, the EOJ stated that it provided opportunities for all prospective candidates, respective of party affiliation or independents, to receive assistance from the Returning Officers at the EOJ constituency offices ahead of the scheduled Nomination Day.

It pointed out that the nomination process requires that any person wishing to be nominated as a candidate completes a nomination form signed by the required number of electors, returns the form to the Returning Officer during the stipulated hours on Nomination Day, and pays the prescribed nomination fee.

The EOJ added that despite the bad weather, the constituency teams made efforts to facilitate prospective candidates prior to the November 6 nomination process.

It said its offices in constituencies where a by-election is to be held were opened at 8:30 a.m. on Nomination Day to assist any intending candidates.

The EOJ noted that it is not aware of other efforts to contact the offices as it had not received any e-mails, nor did it have any record of unanswered calls to the offices.
