Farmers on Government owned lands are reportedly upset about a proposal by the National Irrigation Commission to significantly hike the price per cubic metre for water.
RJR News has learnt that a proposal is on the table to adjust the price from J$1.83 to $15. The adjustment could take effect as early as next month.
A farmer, who asked not to be identified, said he and his colleagues will face huge overheads if the increase is granted.
The farmers have called for the intervention of the Minister of Agriculture, however, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Donovan Stanberry, says while he understands the farmers' plight, an overhaul of the rate structure for irrigation water is necessary.
He says farmers have been encouraged to invest in pressurised pipes that allow for the use of drip technique. A technique that allows farmers to use less water.
