Fire damages shops at May Pen market

Lorraine Green Mason, President of the May Pen Vendors Association

The May Pen Fire Department in Clarendon is investigating Wednesday night's fire at the May Pen market.

The fire, which started about 8:30 p.m., damaged four shops.

The contents, which included ground provisions, were destroyed.

The structure of the market was not affected.

Lorraine Green Mason, President of the May Pen Vendors Association, whose shop was also damaged, is alleging that the fire was due to political intimidation.

"It is very interesting that none of the shops that were damaged have electrical supply, to say that it is a short circuit or whatever. We have not spoken in depth with the fire department, however, I am deeply concerned the twist of events that have been happening over time...," she told Radio Jamaica News

In the meantime, Mrs Green Mason said some vendors are still recovering from the fire which destroyed the May Pen Market on December 1 last year.

She said while some persons had received help, others are still struggling to regain what they have lost.
