Fire destroys shops in Annotto Bay

Some vendors who sell in Annotto Bay, St. Mary, have been displaced after fire destroyed their shops Tuesday morning.

The premises on Main Street where the fire started reportedly housed a variety store, bar and grocery shop.

One of the vendors, Charlene Hayles, told Radio Jamaica News that she was alerted by a neighbour who saw smoke coming from a section of the building.

She said she went inside the shop and began pulling out some of her items, however, she could not manage to pull out her refrigerator so she had to retreat as the rest of her belongings went up in flames.

Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Emilio Ebanks, said fire personnel responded to the blaze about 3:59 a.m.

Two units from the Annotto Bay and Buff Bay fire stations put out the blaze.

Damage is estimated at $2 million.
