The Integrity Commission has apologised to Mayor of Port Maria Richard Creary for what it says was an erroneous statement in its report on the Petrojam investigation.
The Commission had stated that Mr. Creary was a member of a panel that interviewed Floyd Grindley for the position of general manager at Petrojam.
The two-page apology was sent to Mr. Creary on Monday from Executive Director of the Integrity Commission Greg Christie on behalf of the commission.
It came after the Integrity Commission's special report tabled in Parliament on July 1, where it was highlighted that Mr. Creary was "a member of a panel that interviewed Mr. Floyd Grindley for the post of general manager of Petrojam Limited."
But after the report was made public, Mr. Creary blasted the report, saying the information was untrue, and only serves to damage his reputation. He later called for the commission to withdraw the statement.
On July 7, the Integrity Commission corrected those statements in Parliament and later in the Senate on July 10.
The Commission admitted that the conclusion was an error, stating that Mr. Creary was in fact "unable to attend" the interview.
In its apology to Mr. Creary on Monday, the commission said it "sincerely regrets its error and wishes to unreservedly apologise to (him) for any distress embarrassment or inconvenience that it may have caused..."
The letter further stated that the commission is publicly accepting the error and is bringing the apology made to Mr. Creary to the attention of both Houses of Parliament.
The Integrity Commission had questioned whether the placement of certain individuals in key positions at Petrojam served as "corruption enabling mechanisms".
It cited the "strategic" appointment of Dr. Pervecal Bahado-Singh and Mr. Creary to the board of Petrojam, with both men interviewing Floyd Grindley.
The commission now admits Mr. Creary was not present at that interview.
