Three found guilty of trying to export cocaine via postal service

Three persons suspected to be involved in the international drug trade have been found guilty of drug trafficking charges.

The three were charged in connection with a scheme to export cocaine through the Jamaica Postal Service.

In a ruling handed down on June 18, the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court convicted Yasheka James, Leroy Adamson and Ashane Bennett on multiple counts including conspiracy, attempting to export cocaine, and using the postal service for drug trafficking.

The convictions are stemmed from two incidents in June 2020 when cocaine-laced packages were mailed from the Mandeville and Santa Cruz post offices to overseas addresses.

The parcels were intercepted at the Central Sorting Office in Kingston by agents from the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) and confirmed to contain cocaine following forensic testing.

MOCA's Director of Communications Major Basil Jarrett said the case reflects the growing complexity of drug networks and the importance of interagency cooperation.
