Jamaicans could be allowed to travel overseas with just their identification cards when the National Identification System (NIDS) is implemented.
NIDS Project Director Warren Vernon says the ID card will use the International Civil Aviation Organisation Standard, which will allow it to operate like a passport.
He said countries in Europe as well as South America are already using a similar system.
Senator Aubyn Hill noted that despite the government making enrolment in the NIDS voluntary, many private companies could start requiring the NIDS card for doing business.
"I'm encouraging every single Jamaican who can get that NIDS card to have it because when we advertise it as a government, don't worry, when you turn up in Florida, they're gonna say, 'Where's your NIDS card?'" he added, warning that requirement could extend overseas.
The issue was discussed Wednesday evening during a public consultation held by the joint select committee of parliament reviewing the National Identification and Registration Act, which will establish the NIDS.
