The human rights organization, Jamaicans for Justice [JFJ] wants the welfare of the members of the police force to prioritised by the new police commissioner.

Executive Director of JFJ Mickel Jackson says, as Dr Kevin Blake assumes the role of police commissioner he must see to the improvement of working conditions for police personnel.

Ms Jackson says the welfare of the members of the force should not be sacrificed in the face of their duties.

It is critical that the Commissioner not only seek to improve the quality of policing, but promote the welfare of personnel, whose job it is to secure the people of the country, she said in an interview.

She extended that argument to compensation issues, asserting that law enforcement officers should not be put in a position in which they have to engage in litigation for improved salaries and conditions of service.

Instead, she said, "we should have that system in place, that fairly compensates."

It should be readily accepted that law enforcement officers should have "good working conditions," and that, in the face of their "daunting duties," provisions should be made to "ensure that mental health and some of those more psycho-social support are provided to them."

JFJ has also called for the incoming police commissioner to publicly state his own vision  and strategic priorities for the JCF within his first sixty days of assuming his new role.
