JTC Bill should address penalties for school administrators who breach law - Anderson

Dr. Garth Anderson, head of the Teachers Colleges of Jamaica

Dr. Garth Anderson, the head of the Teachers Colleges of Jamaica, is in agreement with the University of Technology (UTech) that the Jamaica Teaching Council Bill should address penalties for school administrators who breach the law.

On Tuesday, UTech Professor Shermaine Barrett highlighted that while the Bill outlines penalties for teachers, it is silent on the matter in relation to administrators.

Dr. Anderson says employers should take some responsibility for ensuring that teachers are registered and meet all other requirements.

"A teacher can't just walk in the classroom and say 'I'm going to teach today'. The teacher is employed," he argued, noting that the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) had also highlighted that issue when it made its submission to the committee reviewing the bill.

"All we are on is how we're going to weed out and treat with the bad teachers. So, after you get them out, what next?" he contended.

Dr. Anderson was speaking Wednesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
