The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation has served notice on business and property owners in the Corporate Area that they face prosecution for failing to keep their properties clean.

City Inspector at the KSAMC, Alrick Francis, told Radio Jamaica News that the Corporation along with the National Solid Waste Management Authority has embarked on an initiative to clean up the city by removing the growing stockpile of garbage from unoccupied properties.

"We have also been serving public health notices on a number of properties that are unkept. So Solid Waste and KSAC, we are doing a joint operation today. Solid Waste is here and they would have also served there notice and will take action on the section 42C of the Solid Waste Management Authority Act. We would have served notice under the Public Health and Nuisance Act of which the notices have not been complied with," he said.

With the hurricane season still on, Mr. Francis said unclean properties could be a haven for rodent infestation.

The clean up initiative was started by Mayor Andrew Swaby.

Mr. Francis warned that property owners face a maximum fine of $1 million if they are taken to court.
