Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. has denied reports that a fraud probe is underway into the operations of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).
There have been reports of the ministry conducting investigations into an incident of fraud.
But speaking at Wednesday's post cabinet press briefing, Pearnel Charles Jr. insisted the ministry is "not engaged in a fraud probe, as has been published. That is false. It's not taking place right now."
"If there is an incident of fraud, I don't think anybody can categorically state that there is or is not, unless there is an adequate investigation that would take place to assess that. So what we have said at the ministry is we can tell you that we are not engaged in a fraud probe," the minister asserted.
Mr. Charles said "robust internal mechanisms" have been engaged to ensure that if there is any incident or weakness, it can be identified and addressed.
He vowed that the ministry will readily investigate any reports of fraud brought to its attention.
