General Secretary of the Jamaica Association of Local Government Officers Helene Davis-Whyte has asserted that the undue delay in the conclusion of investigations involving firefighters continues to be a sore point for the union.
Her comments followed Sergeant Leo Bennett's one-man protest Tuesday on the roof of the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre in St Andrew, over the working conditions of firefighters.
Mr. Bennett has been off the job since May last year after staging a similar protest in the vicinity of the Jamaica Fire Brigade headquarters in Kingston.
The Brigade said he breached regulations in carrying out that protest.
In explaining how it is possible for Sergeant Bennett along with other firefighters to be on suspension for almost a year with no hearing conducted, Mrs. Davis-Whyte said regulations governing the firefighters do not prescribe a length of time for those proceedings.
She said the union continues to lobby for changes.
Facilities
Mrs. Davis-Whyte also said, in relation to one of the concerns raised by Sergeant Bennett about the availability of proper decontamination and cleaning facilities for fire fighters, that the matter was being resolved.
She explained that the delay in the procurement of the much needed equipment was connected with the unavailability of funds in the public sector.
