Concerned residents and relatives of a man fatally shot during a police operation in Lawrence Tavern, St. Andrew on Friday staged a protest on Monday morning calling for his name to be cleared of being involved in criminal activities.
The St. Andrew North Police said 39-year-old Andrew Richards, also known as 'Burry' was part of a major criminal network operating in Lawrence Tavern.
They said an illegal firearm was seized from Mr. Richards during the operation in Tavern Gully, also known as George Mason Drive.
But residents are maintaining that the police targeted the wrong person.
From about 5:15 a.m., they gathered with placards in the vicinity of the Lawrence Tavern Police Station calling for justice for Mr. Richards, whom they said was a honest tradesman.
Mr. Richards' uncle, Cambert Thomas, said while he is aware of crime in the community, his nephew was not a participant.
"Jamaica need fi clean up, but the police dem need fi do a better job and stop kill people pickney and put gun pon dem. Dat nuh right! You a mess up di man name," said the distraught uncle.
"A di name mi waan Andrew name fi clear. Him dead already, and can't come back.... A just di gun part mi want come offa mi nephew name, the murderer part mi want come offa him name. Just dat," the man pleaded.
Mr. Thomas said there is now a lack of trust in the police, arguing that he now believes the cops' account in many similar fatal shootings, is a lie.
