Local Government to make statement on Clarendon Municipal Corporation leadership this week

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has promised to make a statement this week in response to emerging tensions in the Clarendon Municipal Corporation, where the People's National Party [PNP] and the Jamaica Labour Party [JLP] both have the same number of divisional seats.

There is now a tie in the municipal corporation, with each party controlling 11 electoral divisions.

The PNP believes this could cause it to regain control of the parish through the popular vote.

Minority Leader in the Clarendon Municipal Corporation, Scean Barnswell, has announced that the PNP caucus will seek the advice of the party's attorneys to determine the next step, following its by-election victory in the Aenon Town division.

Mr McKenzie was asked for a response on the matter at Sunday's Annual Conference of the JLP.
