The President of the opposition People's National Party [PNP], Mark Golding, is expressing confidence his party will secure a majority of seats in the next local government elections.
The Jamaica Labour Party currently has a majority of seats in the municipal corporations, elected through local government eledtions, alongside its dominance in the national Parliament.
Mr Golding was responding to a jab by Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Tuesday, warning him to be careful of his wish for the elections to be held in short order: "I am here to tell him, I trust the Jamaican people's judgment. I believe in democracy; we abide by the results of elections, and we are confident (that) with the way this country is being run now, and how the people of Jamaica are revolting against this government, are rejecting the corruption and the mismanagement and the lack of care for the ordinary Jamaican people, we have nothing fo fear."
To the contrary, he dared the Prime Minister to "bring it on!", in reference to the holding of the elections.
He said his confidence was bolstered the by results of the latest Don Anderson poll, commissioned by the PNP, which he said "has affirmed the continuation of the trend that we have seen over the last year."
The PNP President promised a legal challenge if there is any attempt by the government to further postpone the local government elections.
Earlier this year the Holness Administration delayed the holding of the elections for a third time, citing a lack of funding.
In referencing the Privy Council ruling in the case brought by the Opposition in Trinidad & Tobago challenging the legality of the postponement of the local government polls there, Mr Golding said he has obtained legal advice on the matter.
Mr Golding was addressing members of the party's National Executive Council at a meeting at St Mary High School in Highgate, on Sunday.
