The Jamaica Urban Transit Company's losses and subsidies are currently running at J$20 billion, or 0.66 % of GDP, while the amount of money collected from tickets or the fare box is $1.5 billion, compared with $3 billion in 2016.
The company now deploys about 200 buses per day, compared with 400 per day in 2016 but its operating expenses remain the same.
This has prompted Opposition Spokesman on Transport Mikael Phillips to suggest that the JUTC should have undergone significant restructuring, including increasing its fleet and reducing its operating costs and losses, before expanding its operations into rural areas.
