MP urges NWC to change regulation that ties water to property owner

Kerensia Morrison

Member of Parliament for St. Catherine North Eastern, Kerensia Morrison has called for the National Water Commission (NWC) to revise its 1985 regulation that ties water to the property owner rather than the customer.

Ms. Morrison, who was contributing to the State of the Constituency Debate in Parliament on Tuesday, said the provision is adversely affecting her constituents, many of whom may be inconvenienced if property owners die or migrate with no interest in clearing their debt.

Calling the regulation "outrageous", the MP lamented that people were being asked to pay off bills of "$200,000, $300,000, $500,000, millions of dollars" worth of water that they did not consume, in order to be able receive the service from the NWC.

Ms. Morrison said the lack of water is hampering development in the communities in her constituency.

JPS

The first time MP has also called for the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to improve the quality of service it provides to rural communities.

She said residents in some sections of her constituency have complained about frequent power cuts.

"We urge JPS to be sensitive to the needs of that chicken farmer. Having just killed, they hear seh what? Light gone, and the entire stock is spoilt. This happens why? Because you did not clear overhanging trees?" she complained.

She said she has provided JPS with a list of areas in her constituency that are most affected by the power cuts.
